We round up everything coming to streaming services this week, including Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+, ThreeNow, Neon and TVNZ+.
Washington Black (Disney+, July 23)
Based on the Booker Prize-shortlisted novel by Esi Edugyan and starring Ernest Kingsley Junior and Sterling K Brown, Washington Black is set on a brutal 19th century Barbados sugar plantation. Young slave and science virtuoso Washington witnesses a shocking act of violence and is forced to flee, embarking on a globe-trotting retro-futuristic odyssey. In a world where oppression has stolen the ability to dream, he must navigate uncharted lands and impossible odds, as his understanding of family, freedom and love is challenged. Blending a story of emancipation with high adventure, this powerful Jules Verne-esque travelogue is a must-watch.
Happy Gilmore 2 (Netflix, July 25)
Get ready to return to the golf green with Adam Sandler as the legendary Happy Gilmore. Thirty years after the first Happy Gilmore movie, Happy is now swinging for a golfing comeback to fulfil his son’s dream, as the failed ice hockey player turned long-driving king of the 1996 Tour Championship reunites with Shooter McGavin (Christopher McDonald) and Virginia Venit (Julie Bowen). This nostalgia-charged legacy sequel also stars Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny as Gilmore’s caddie, as well as a line-up of professional golfers cameoing as themselves.
The Hunting Wives (TVNZ+, July 22)
This adaptation of May Cobb’s best-selling novel sees Sophie O’Neil (Brittany Snow) and her family leave America’s bustling east coast for a new life in the Texan south. The change of pace leaves Sophie feeling restless until she befriends Margot Banks (Malin Åkerman), a bewitching socialite and member of The Hunting Wives, an elite clique of women who gleefully sink shots and fire off assault rifles. But in this salacious blend of Dallas and Pretty Little Liars, there’s a snake in the grass as Sophie and her new friends find themselves at the centre of a murder investigation, and the hunters become the hunted.
Better Man (Neon, Prime Video, July 26)
Yes, Robbie Williams is played by a CGI chimpanzee in this award-winning film, but what may come as a bigger surprise is that despite its cheeky conceit, Better Man is a bloody blast. Labelled as “one of the most thoughtfully constructed movies about a musician“, this biopic charts the soaring highs and distressing lows of the British superstar’s tumultuous, highly publicised music career. “It is audacious and weird, sinking its teeth deep into mental illness, ambition, loss and addiction, while also delivering some of the most memorable pop hits of the early 2000s, while also giving… Cocaine Chimp,” wrote Better Man fan Alex Casey.
Trophy Wife: Murder on Safari (Disney+, July 21)
You might remember the wild headlines about Larry Rudolph, a wealthy American dentist who was accused of murdering his wife while on safari in Zambia in 2016. This three-part true-crime docuseries goes beyond those outrageous headlines to spotlight a feral tale of greed, sex, and death. Based on the Rolling Stone article ‘Before the Dentist Knows You’re Dead’, the series charts the tumultuous fallout from Rudolph’s secret love triangle, his wife’s suspicious death and the international police investigation that followed.
Pick of the Flicks: Monster Island (Shudder, AMC+, July 25)
Owing to its Western title, Monster Island might seem like another run-of-the-mill B-grade horror, but don’t be deceived – it still has a few hair-raising tricks up its sleeve. Set during World War Two, the film follows two soldiers from Japan and Britain who become shipwrecked on a nightmarish deserted island. To outsmart the deadly creature that’s hunting them, the two adversaries must put aside their differences and form an uneasy alliance. Inspired by Malay folklore and Creature from the Black Lagoon, as well as alleged wartime sightings of the creature, Monster Island is sure to scare you stiff.
