A weekly series where we pick one local film from the Show Me Shorts catalogue on Lightbox.

Sonny; My Older Brother was a part the 2012 Show Me Shorts festival, and written and directed by Tammy Davis. You’ll know him as Munter from Outrageous Fortune, and the director of Stan Walker’s new dance movie Born to Dance. His short film Sonny is a slice of childhood life, following two brothers as they find ways to escape the darker side of their everyday lives.

Sonny is a beautifully shot reflection of the minutiae of childhood, from the washed out summer nights climbing old tractors to the dull, seemingly never-ending task of doing dowdy old chores. Languid shots capture crackling outdoor fires and soaring homemade kites – all the while there’s a grim truth hanging over the peaceful, contemplative scenes. There’s also an awesome song from Frank Kora called, funnily enough, ‘Brothers’. It’s a stunning 10 minute slice of life.
